Requesting Games

Requesting Games

The Available Positions page lets you see upcoming games that still have open spots and request to be assigned. This puts you in control of expressing interest in specific games - though your administrator always has the final say on who gets the assignment.

How It Works

When your group has games with unfilled positions, they'll appear on the Available Positions page. You can browse these games, see the details, and click Request to let your administrator know you'd like to work that game.

Important: Requesting a game does not mean you're automatically assigned. Your administrator reviews all requests and makes the final decision based on factors like experience, balance of assignments, travel distance, and group needs. Think of it as raising your hand - not claiming a seat.

Finding Available Games

  1. Go to Available Positions from the side menu
  2. Select your group from the dropdown at the top
  3. You'll see a list of upcoming games with open positions

Each game card shows:

  • Date and time
  • League name, event type, and game number
  • Location (park/venue)
  • Teams (if enabled by your group)
  • Positions - which roles are filled and which are still open (shown as "Available")
  • Your Availability - whether you've marked yourself as available for that date

What You Might Not See

Not every open game will appear on your Available Positions page. There are a couple of reasons for this:

Rank Restrictions

Your administrator can assign you a rank (e.g., Rookie, Novice, Junior, Senior) and set rank requirements on leagues. If a league requires a minimum rank higher than yours, games in that league won't show up on your page.

This isn't a bug - it's by design. It ensures officials are matched to games appropriate for their experience level. If you believe your rank should be updated, talk to your group administrator.

Request Window

Administrators control when the Available Positions page opens up for requests. Some groups prefer to handle initial assignments themselves - using your availability to build the schedule first - and only open up the remaining unfilled games for member requests afterward.

This means the page might be empty early in the season even though games exist. Once your administrator opens the request window, the available games will appear.

Making a Request

  1. Find a game you'd like to work
  2. Click the green Request button on the right side of the game card
  3. A confirmation dialog will appear - click Confirm Request to submit

Once submitted, the game card will update to show a Requested badge, and the Request button will be replaced with an Unrequest option in case you change your mind.

If You're Marked as Not Available

You can still request a game even if your availability shows "Not Available" for that date. When you click Request, ASM will give you the option to adjust your availability right from the confirmation dialog - so you can mark yourself as available without leaving the page.

Removing a Request

Changed your mind? No problem:

  1. Find the game you previously requested (it will show the Requested badge)
  2. Click Unrequest
  3. Confirm the removal

Your request will be withdrawn and the administrator will no longer see your interest in that game.

What Happens After You Request

Your administrator can see all requests that have come in for each game. When they go to assign officials, your request signals that you're interested and available. They'll make the final call based on:

  • Your rank and qualifications for that league
  • How many games you've already been assigned (fairness)
  • Location and logistics
  • Any other group-specific criteria

If you're selected, the game will appear on your My Schedule page as an assignment. If not, no notification is sent - the request simply stays as a signal the administrator considered.

View Options

The Available Positions page has a settings menu with toggles to customize your view:

  • Group Locations - groups games happening at the same venue on the same day together
  • Show Teams - displays team names on the game cards
  • Show Game Comment - shows any notes the administrator added to the game
  • Show Archived Groups - includes groups that are no longer active in your group selector
  • Show Schedule ID - displays the internal schedule ID (useful for support)

Tips

  • Keep your availability up to date - administrators often assign based on availability before opening requests, so being marked as available gives you the best chance
  • Request early - if multiple officials request the same game, administrators may give priority to whoever expressed interest first
  • Be realistic about your rank level - requesting games above your qualification level won't help, since rank-restricted games won't appear on your page anyway
  • Use Unrequest if your plans change - it keeps the request list clean for your administrator
  • Check back regularly - new games may appear as the schedule fills in or the request window opens
